SCGT Noble Bradman Stand

The SCG is one of the world’s best cricket grounds with its intimate atmosphere and great sense of tradition.

The construction of the new four level Noble Bradman stand offers spectators better viewing, facilities and atmosphere. Improvements include seats closer to the field of play and mostly undercover, no obstructed views, the largest video screen of any Australian sports ground and enhanced catering, corporate, media and AFL player facilities. Superior dining and bar areas, including a roof terrace that sets a new benchmark for Australian sports venues. The venue includes new OB truck parking facilities, maintenance workshops, and the ever important green keeper.

Barnwell Cambridge was engaged on a “Design and Construct” contract for a turn-key solution, for electrical and communications services that would meet the needs of the multiple stakeholders involved in the facility.

It was essential that the SCG remain operational throughout the upgrade, with several different sporting codes utilising the venue during construction. These included the notable deciding Ashes Test Match and the opening Game of the Major League Baseball season for the 2014.

The design process including developing lighting design concepts that progresses to 3D modelling with image renders and lighting calculations for presentation to stakeholders. This process enabled the greater feedback on design intents to ensure the final product met all parties’ key requirements. This included the various areas of grand stand areas, private boxes, function rooms, restaurants, media areas, amenities, offices, workshops, sports lighting, and as a first in NSW, the coloured up lighting of the grand stand roof above the terrace areas. The lighting design for the project was of such high standard and installation such high regard, it won the state and national NECA lighting awards as recognised by industry peers.

The design process also required the integration of various communications services as a seamless package to maintain high end user experience for the public, staff and facility operations. The electrical design catered for various dynamic loads with ability for greater expansion together with the establishment of a new dedicated HV feeder and four transformer sub-station. The services provided included:

⦁ High Voltage main switchboard, & HV feeder reticulation.
